FAQ:
Q: Does PL-2303 support serial keyboard and mouse?
A: In Windows 98 and ME, the PL-2303 driver has two parts: one is the virtual COM port driver, and the other one is the USB support driver. The PL-2303 cannot support serial keyboard and mouse because the PL-2303 does not take any IRQ resouce that is required by serial keyboard and mouse to interrupt OS.
In Windows 2000 or XP, the PL-2303 driver was made by Microsoft's WDM and only have one driver on port class registry. In the WDM driver, the COM port driver is somewhat close with the HID interface, so PL-2303 driver have some features similar to HID that may allow some serial mouse/keyboard to work on the PL-2303. However, since there is a very small number of traditional serial keyboard/mouse available now and not enough resources, we already considered this issue as a limitation.
Q: How do I change the COM port number of the USB to Serial bridge cable under Windows 98SE or Windows ME?
A: If your computer comes with physical COM port, it is most likely to occupy the COM1 and even COM2 if there are two physical ports. After the USB to Serial Bridge driver is installed, it will create a virtual COM port and the default setting assigned by the OS will be COM2 or COM3 if there are two physical COM ports on your computer. If you want to change the assigned COM3 for the USB-Serial Bridge to the COM1, please follow the steps as below under Win98Se or WinMe
Q-1: How to change the sequence of the COM Port position created by the USB-Serial Bridge?
ANS: If your system comes with physical COM port, then it will occupy the COM1 and even COM2 if your system has two. After USB-Serial Bridge driver is installed, it will create a virtual COM port and the default setting by the OS is the COM2 or COM3 if there are two physical COM ports on your system. If you want to change the COM3 created by USB-Serial Bridge to the COM1, follow these steps:
1. Double click My Computer, Control Panel, System.
2. Click Device Manager tab.
3. Click "Ports (COM & LPT)" and double click on "Communications Port (COM1)".
4. In "General" menu bar, click and enable the [Disable in this hardware profile] on Device Usage. This will disable the COM1 port device.
5. Click OK and you will see a red "X" mark on the "Communications Port (COM1)" item.
6. Click the "Communications Port (COM3)" item.
7. In "Resources" menu bar, click and remove the check mark from [Use automatic settings]. Then click the "Change Setting" bar to change the value of the "Input/ Output Range" to [03F8 - 03FF]. This range is the default value for COM1.
8. Restart Windows and go back to Device Manager.
9. In "Ports (COM & LPT) item, we will see Communications Port (COM1) with a red 'X' mark on top, and Communications Port (COM2) USB to Serial Port (COM1).
The COM port positions are now changed successfully. You don't need to change the IRQ value as the USB-Serial Bridge doesn't need IRQ.
